Practical Nursing

Program Mission

The purpose of the Practical Nursing Program at Southwest Technical College is to prepare the graduate to practice safely in accordance with the National Patient Safety Goals (NPSG), and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) Essentials.

Graduates will be prepared to enter the nursing profession as a Licensed Practical Nurse or continue nursing academic endeavors, including Registered Nurse licensure.

Practical Nursing

Philosophy

The philosophy of the Practical Nursing Program at Southwest Technical College utilizes the nursing metaparadigm of “person, health, environment, and nursing” to underscore the importance of skill development.

Realizing how each concept has an effect on the other is essential in giving safe, systematic, and holistic nursing care. This type of care includes the interprofessional team approach. As the dedicated graduate works with others on the health care team, negative effects of the environment are lessened, and the person is able to achieve a state of optimal health that is unique to the individual.
